Brakes

A brake is a mechanical device, which inhibits motion, slowing or stopping a moving object or preventing its motion.

When the brake pedal of a modern vehicle with hydraulic brakes is pushed, ultimately a piston pushes the brake pad against the brake disc which slows down and stops the vehicle.

On the brake drum system, the pistons in the cylinder push the brake shoes against the inside of the drum, which also slows and stops the vehicle.
